Harrison High School Fall Varsity Sports Teams Finish Season in Sectional Play

Harrison High School Fall Sports teams competed in Sectional play this past weekend.  The Boys Varsity Soccer team was seeded #22 and played their outbracket game against the #11 seeded team from Sleepy Hollow.  Although the Huskies played tough, they were unable to prevail and advance in the Section 1 tournament, losing by a score of 2-0.  Junior Rene Marin had two shots on goal and senior goalie Allen Passafaro recorded eight saves.

The #21 seeded Girls Varsity Soccer team delighted Huskies fans with an outstanding win over # 12 seeded Nanuet in their play-in game on Friday afternoon.  With goals by junior Erica LaManna and freshman Erin Nelson, the Girls Soccer team won by a score of 2-0.   Sophomore Gia Mancini had 13 saves, fighting off two critical shots on goal that could have been game changers.  The Huskies advanced to a first round matchup against #5 seeded Panas.  Unfortunately, the Huskies were unable to advance to the quarterfinals, losing by a score of 3-1.

The Field Hockey team and the Volleyball team experienced season ending losses in their first round Sectional matchups.  The Field Hockey team lost to Brewster and the Girls Volleyball team lost a tough battle against a Yonkers team that had only lost three matches all year by a score of 0-3 (25-27, 23-25, 14-25).

The Girls Swimming team competed in the Conference III Championships against the powerhouse teams from Horace Greeley, Fox Lane, and Rye.  Although Harrison’s swimmers will not be advancing to the Section 1 Championships, many of the young swimmers on the team posted impressive point-earning results on which they look to build next year.   The 200 Medley Relay of freshman Laura Byrd, sophomore Stephanie Pon, sophomore Sakura Tateiwa, and senior Sophie Major placed 6th; the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Laura Byrd, Divya Molakala, Stephanie Pon, and Sophie Major placed 7th, and the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Julia Ng, Nanami Hariguci, Divya Molakada, Sakura Tateiwa finished in 8th place.

The 83rd Harrison-Rye Football Game became an instant classic, destined to be remembered for years as an incredible defensive battle.  The Huskies held the Rye Garnets scoreless through the first three quarters but ultimately were defeated by a score of 8-2 in the final minutes.  Senior Jeremy Altamuro was awarded the Christopher Mello Award, given to a member of each team, in honor of former Rye High School student-athlete and Rye Football captain Chris Mello who was lost on 9/11.

On October 15, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed in the League III – A Championships.  The Boys Freshmen team finished in third place, the girls came in 4th place and the Varsity Boys recorded a  5th place finish in their respective categories. On October 24th, the teams competed in the Westchester County Cross Country championships.  The Freshmen Boys finished 9th out of 16 schools, the JV Boys were 23rd out of 28 schools and the Boys Varsity runners placed 22nd out of 35 schools.  The Girls Cross Country runners were 17th out of 28 schools.
