Harrison High School Earns Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction Award

For the first time in Harrison High School’s history, all 29 varsity interscholastic sports teams have earned ‘Scholar-Athlete’ awards by having team grade point averages (GPAs) of 90 percent or higher.  This accomplishment earns Harrison’s student-athletes the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) “Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction” Award for 2012-2013. In order to earn this award, every varsity interscholastic sports team during all three sports seasons must have achieved the NYPHSAA Scholar Athlete Team Award.

New York State schools have until June 30 to report their data to NYSPHSAA, so state-wide results will not be announced until later.

“This is an extraordinary achievement to have every team in all three seasons achieve this recognition,” said Harrison Athletic Director Pat Seligman. “To give you an idea of the selectivity of this prestigious award, last year 24 school districts qualified from the entire state of New York.  This achievement echoes Harrison’s commitment to excellence by stressing the importance of the student in student-athlete.  It’s an amazing accomplishment and we couldn’t be prouder of our kids.”

Each sport has a different number of student-athletes who count towards the award. The number is roughly analogous to the number of regular players (or starters) per team. For example, Football and Soccer requires the grade point average of the highest 12 players on the team, while Basketball and Bowling require seven. Each eligible student-athlete’s GPA is added together, and then divided by the required number per team to determine a team GPA average. If it is over 90, the team earns Team Scholar-Athlete designation. When all teams during the whole scholastic year average over 90, the School of Distinction Award is bestowed.
