Harrison Avenue Fifth Graders Help Sort Donated Medical Supplies

Fifth graders at Harrison Avenue Elementary travelled to the Afya Foundation in Yonkers to help sort medical supplies that will be shipped to countries in need.  The students spent many hours helping to sort the supplies to be shipped and spent time touring the warehouse facility and learning about the Foundation’s mission.

The Afya Foundation solicits and collects surplus medical supplies, hospital equipment, and humanitarian provisions to be shipped to African and Caribbean countries that have limited medical resources as a result of natural disaster, poverty or political strife.  The Foundation has shipped supplies to Haiti and the Philippines after earthquakes and hurricanes decimated the region’s medical capabilities in the past few years.

According to Afya, the Foundation to date has diverted 6,000,000 pounds of medical and humanitarian supplies valued at $24 million that would have been discarded in landfills or incinerators.  For more information on the Afya Foundation, please visit their website at www.afyafoundation.org.
