Non-Profits Need Apply: United Way Funding Deadline is Dec. 6

Get the grantwriter going on the projects you'd undertake in education, health or financial stability.

The United Way collected 2,600 survey responses from people in Putnam and Westchester counties on the topics of education, health and financial stability.

Now they're looking for non-profits who want to partner with them to make substantive change over four years. And, they've focused the work to be done into six categories.

The survey results indicated that these issues were of greatest concern, officials said.

In the area of education, residents from Westchester and Putnam felt early elementary school education and parental involvement are the most important focus. In the area of financial stability the greatest concerns were affordable housing , medical care, and lack of jobs. In the area of health the biggest concerns were access to affordable healthcare, chronic illness, and stresses of daily life. For children and teens, bullying and discrimination were the top health concerns, followed closely by drug and alcohol use.

So the United Way wants non-profits to apply for partnership grants in those areas.

“This is the most exciting part of our work,” said Naomi Adler, president and CEO of United Way of Westchester and Putnam, in a written statement. “We have had great partners and successes these last four years and I now look forward to infusing new ideas and approaches as we look to the future.”

Here's how the United Way designed the programs it wants to build out:
  • Thrive By Five – School readiness
  • SmartStart – elementary school work with at-risk children
  • Teach Me to Fish...Work Skills for Life – Job skills training
  • Homeward Bound – Low income housing advocacy
  • Step Up 2 Health – Anti-obesity and healthy living
  • Voices for Positive Choices – Reducing risky behaviors like drug use among youth
