My World Exhibit Opening

Lee MacCormick Edwards was born in Sydney, Australia, and holds a doctoral degree from Columbia University. An art historian specializing in the arts and social history of the nineteenth century, she has published books and many articles in her field of interest. Lee has lectured in the United States, Europe and Australia on nineteenth-century painting, architecture and photography. Her photographs, which she views as extensions of her interest in the arts of the nineteenth century, have been shown in solo exhibitions at the SoHo Photo Gallery and at Sarah Lawrence College, as well as at the annual art shows of the Century Association in New York. Now retired, Lee formerly taught Art History at Sarah Lawrence College. “I have titled this exhibition of my photographs My World, because I wanted to show a diverse but interconnected set of images of the colorful, light-filled environments that inspire me. Whether shimmering water in the glare of the bright Australian sun, scenes of outback emptiness, exotic animals and birds, or serene European lakes, these elements, with their beautiful colors and shapes, become part of a larger space—a whole world for me, if you will. While my photographs may at first glance appear disparate, they also convey ongoing narratives expressed in recurring motifs and inner meanings. I see how they work as opposites or similarities, as escapes or fantasies. I hope those narrative threads will affect my viewers, too.”
