Harrison Council for the Arts presents “Winter Grays” paintings by Ruth O. Carlucci at the Harrison Public Library, 2 Bruce Avenue, December 30 to January 26 with an opening reception January 5 from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

The abstract, mixed media paintings assembled for this exhibit were not inspired by the monochrome of the season, but they share with winter a muted palette appropriate for a January exhibition.  The materials used are fast drying, transitory, mutable.  Covered or wiped out, marks leave a trace, a palimpsest of an earlier state.  Water soluble crayons, acrylics, pastels and charcoal allow for the impulsive and imprecise, the ambiguous and the accidental. The speed of these surfaces varies but all these works have an expanding energy.  They could be selected segments of a provisional scribble on an endless wall.

Born in Port Chester, NY, painter Ruth Carlucci earned a BA from the University of Minnesota, an AAS from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and did graduate work at Columbia University.  She has studied at the National Academy School, and in Italy.  She lives and works in Rye Brook, NY.

Group exhibitions include the Alex Adam Gallery, NY; the Cork Gallery, Lincoln Center, NY; and the Rye Art Center, Rye, NY.  She is a recipient of the Ogden Pleissner Scholarship, 2006, and numerous awards at the National Academy Annual Exhibitions including the Lorraine Grace First Prize, 2007, and the First Prize in Painting, 2008.

The exhibit may be viewed Mondays and Wednesdays 9:30am to 9pm; Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays 9:30am to 5:30pm., and Sundays 1:00 to 5:00pm.  For info call 914/835-0324 www.harrisonpl.org.
