A female jumped from the bridge in the early hours of Thursday morning, she has not been located.

A woman jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The incident was first reported at 2:38 a.m. after a bridge worker apparently witnessed the woman plunge from the span.

A sergeant with the State Troopers based in Tarrytown confirmed that a female had jumped from the bridge and that a car had been abandoned. The sergeant could provide no further details of the incident as of 4:30 a.m. because relatives had yet to be notified.

During rescue operations, State Police could be seen staked out on the Rockland County side of the superstructure, in the south-bound lane of traffic.

Marine rescue crews from the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Fire Departments participated in search and rescue operations. Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members were also on scene to provide any medical support that may have been needed.

"We responded to a confirmed report of a female jumper," said Tarrytown Chief Engineer Peter Saracelli.

The search also involved a marine unit from Irvington, two units from Rockland, county police units and divers from Piermont. County helicopters were not dispatched to the scene.

Despite searching for the female for over an hour, the search was called off for the night at about 4:10 a.m.

"They swept the river south all the way to Ardsley," Saracelli said. "They used thermal imaging cameras, but nothing was spotted."

Saracelli said that the current was moving in the southern direction at approximately 100 feet per minute at the time of the reported suicide attempt.

He said Tarrytown rescue units would continue search efforts tomorrow if they were requested by State Police or the county.

"We won't be searching tomorrow unless we're called out," he said.
