Week in Review: Primary Elections, Controversial Class and Bad Weather

A summary of this week's Harrison news.

It was primary election day on Tuesday, as voters had the opportunity to choose representatives for their respective political parties for this November's general election.

We had coverage of the results as they came in Tuesday evening, as well as coverage of Thomas Roach's win over Mark Jaffe in the Democratic 89th Assembly primary.

Tuesday was also the debut of New York State's new voting machines. Although voter turnout locally was sparse, there were several small issues with the machines—most of which were worked out by the afternoon.

There was also another development the affordable housing case against Westchester County. The federal government could possibly step in and mandate affordable housing for low to medium income families in the county. So far Westchester County has submitted three plans to satisfy the terms of the lawsuit, all of which have been rejected by a federal monitor.

The Harrison Town Board is at odds with a member of the Harrison Police Department as they are to pay for a dance class at Manhattanville College.

In a long-standing provision in the PBA (police union) contract with the town, Harrison pays for college classes taken by members of the police department if they are applied toward a degree. The officer was within his rights as a union member to take the class, but board members were frustrated by the type of class taken and the fact that it is not related to police work.

Bad weather on Thursday night washed away a busy night in Harrison sports and damaged a building on the SUNY Purchase campus. Lighting and rain cancelled a football and soccer game at the high school, and the heavy precipitation broke a drainage pipe in a campus office building. The pipe-break lead to flood damage and both sporting events were re-scheduled.

Harrison police said they arrested six people in relation to drug possession this week.

In sports news, the Harrison volleyball team grabbed a key victory over Port Chester. The football team knocked off Sleepy Hollow on Sunday afternoon.
