Week in Review: Deadly Car Accident and Start of Football Season

The week that was in Harrison news from Aug. 23-29.

This week began with a deadly car accident on Interstate 287 early Monday morning.

The accident occurred around 7 a.m. when police say the driver a large white passenger van slipped off the interstate and crashed into a tree near Westchester Avenue. One passenger was killed and 12 other passengers were injured.

Police believe speed, tire condition and the wet pavement were preliminary contributing factors. Traffic was backed up in both directions throughout the heart of the Monday morning commute.

The Harrison Town Board has accepted a state retirement incentive program in an effort to cut salary costs for the 2011 budget. The state-run program has been offered and accepted by the town in the past. It is a different program than the one used last year that led to the retirement of 17 town employees.

Harrison Mayor/Supervisor said that she expects only a handful of employees to retire.

In other government news, the water restriction that has been in effect throughout most of the summer has been lifted.

Football season has started in Harrison. The team has already kicked-off fall camp and the season will start in two weeks with a home game against Roosevelt. We took a look at how the team is shaping up looking toward the season.

St. Vincent's hospital on North Street is expected to have a new owner by the end of October. St. Joseph's Medical Center has announced its intention to purchase the hospital and is now seeking the approval of bankruptcy court.

St. Joseph's, which is based out of Yonkers, has no plans to change any of the hospital's current operations, but there will be a review of the hospital during the transition period, according to Dean Civitello, an executive at St. Joseph's. 

We also caught up with a vendor at the farmers market on the PepsiCo campus this week. Renee McCaine-Taylor will be selling her highly touted olive oil at the market for the next few weeks, so head over and check it out if you are interested.

The Harrison police blotter included an arrest for alleged cocaine possession as well as vandalism to a vehicle parked in Purchase.
