UPDATE: Water Levels Return to Normal in Manhattanville Road Area

Water pressure has returned to normal after an early morning water main break affected several businesses in the area of Manhattanville Road.

Water pressure has been restored to normal levels in the Manhattanville Road area, after workers were able to bypass a fracture in a 12-inch pipe.

The pipe broke at 7 a.m. on Tuesday and affected Mastercard headquarters, among other corporations in the area. Businesses as far west as Gannett Drive were reporting issues with their water throughout the day.

The Westchester Joint Water Works, which is in charge of supplying water to the area, will now work to excavate the pipe to make permanent repairs, said David Birdsall, the business director for the WJWW.

Repairs could last until tomorrow, but customers should not notice any more problems, he said.

"The bulk of the impact was to the corporate customers and hotels, although some residents were affected in that corporate park," said Birdsall.

The origin of the problem was located on Manhattanville Road, near Interstate 684, a few hours after businesses in the area began reporting low or no water pressure. Authorities will not know how large the crack was until they are able to excavate the pipe, said Birdsall.

"There was a fair amount of water leaking out of it, so presumably it was a fairly large crack," he said.

The reason for the leak will also not be known for sure until the pipe is reached, but an aging pipe or some type of defect are the most likely reasons, said Birdsall.

"I wouldn't expect it to be anything out of the ordinary," he said.
