Study: Purchase 8th Richest Zip Code in U.S.

A study of America's richest zip codes in 2011 places Purchase in the top 10.

It's been "Great to Live in Harrison" for decades, but according to a recent study it pays even more to live in Purchase.

A study recently published in Business Week named Purchase the eight richest zip code in the United States. To find its conclusion, the study compared average household income and average net worth of area homes.

Purchase, well known for its large estates, lavish country clubs and attractive green space, was one of only two New York zip codes that cracked the top 10.

The study found Purchase has an average household income of $268,696 and an average home worth of more than $1.5 million. The study ranked Purchase the second richest zip code in the state behind only Old Westbury, which placed second in the nation.

Over the years the hamlet on Harrison's northern end has drawn celebrities and professional athletes because of its quite neighborhoods and proximity to New York City. Purchase is also home to several corporate headquarters including MasterCard and PepsiCo.

The richest zip code in the nation, according to the study, is Palm Beach, FL., with an average household income of more than $370,000 and average home value of just less than $1.5 million.

The nation's richest zip codes were mostly found in suburbs of New York and Los Angeles. According to Business Week, most major cities didn't make the cut because they have a greater diversity of income.
