The National Weather Service is warning residents of central and southern Westchester that prolonged rain could cause localized flooding.

Weather experts are predicting persistent rainfall between now and 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Rainfall totals will vary throughout the region, but some areas could accumulate as much as 5.5 inches of rain or more.

That will affect low-lying areas, basements and flood-prone parkways throughout lower Westchester.

Here's a detailed map of rainfall expectations for the area.

To blame, said the National Weather Service, is a low pressure system along the Carolinas tracking northward today combining with a stalled front with "abundant Atlantic and Gulf moisture."

Despite lingering debris from the powerful wind storm that hit the area earlier this month, Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh said that the town is prepared for more rain.

"All we can do is clear out the streams and the catch basins," said Walsh. "They are doing an excellent job clearing that out."

Most areas can withstand rain over a long period of time, as long as the precipitation does not become too intense, said Walsh. She added that she will look at some of the streams and swamps in Harrison Tuesday evening to get a better idea of possible flooding.

Some minor flooding could be seen in some low-lying areas of town Tuesday afternoon (pictured above).
