Winter Weather Update: Trouble Spots and Accidents

Another storm, this time with sleet and freezing rain along with snow, is creating some hazardous road conditions.

Update: 12:20 p.m.

All precipitation has turned to rain after temperatures jumped above freezing late this morning. There is still slush on some side roads in Harrison, but most major highways including Interstate 287, 684 and the Hutchinson River Parkway are clear.

But roads are still wet and slippery in some areas. There is also some minor flooding on side roads.

The winter weather advisory issued for southern Westchester County has been lifted.

UPDATED: TROUBLE SPOTS AND ACCIDENTS
  • A car accident that  on the Hutchinson River Parkway was cleared from the parkway's southbound shoulder this morning at about 8:30 a.m.
  • A minor accident took place just after 10 a.m. on Interstate 287 eastbound exit 10. A white taxi cab was in the median and appeared to have spun out. The exit remained open while authorities cleared the scene.
  • A leaking pipe caused minor flooding at the intersection of Union Avenue and Genesee Trail this morning. Water was covering Genesee Trail near the intersection and leaking onto Union Avenue shortly after the incident was reported at about 10:45 a.m. None of the water froze on the roads, but it was several inches deep in some spots. The Harrison Department of Public Works had was at the scene by 12 p.m. and the water was shut off.

Snow, sleet and freezing rain have the region under another winter weather advisory today, as a layer of ice is expected to follow the two to three inches of snowfall that fell early this morning.

The changeover from snow to freezing rain took place in the hours before rush hour, and the freezing rain lasted for a few hours after that. A winter weather advisory remains in affect until 1 p.m.

One to three tenths of an inch of freezing rain are expected to fall on top of the snow before temperatures rise to above freezing in the early afternoon. At that point precipitation should change over to rain, which will continue to fall into the evening hours, possibly accumulating an additional three quarters of an inch of rain, according to the NWS. 

Roads in the Harrison area are going to be "extremely hazardous during the morning rush" and "treacherous into early this afternoon", according to the NWS. All travelers are urged to proceed with caution.

The Harrison Central School District  today because of the weather, the has also been postponed.
