Moms Talk: Teaching Children to Cope with Sorrow
Dealing with death can be unfamiliar and frightening territory for kids. How have you made tough times easier for your children?
On Monday, Harrison's Town Clerk Joseph Acocella unexpectedly passed away at age 30 after battling health issues for most of his life. The Harrison community is mourning the death of an inspirational figure who community members have described as courageous, caring and truly kind.
As parents, we have an instinct to protect our children from hardship, but when an unexpected death strikes a community like it did on Monday, it can be near impossible to not let a child know what's going on. We'd like to think that dealing with death is something that comes along with being an adult, but sometimes children are unfortunately exposed to issues like sorrow and grief.
How have you made dealing with the death of a loved one or friend easier for your child? Is it possible to be honest with a child about the permanency of death while also shielding them from hardship?
