St. Vincent's Investigating On-Campus Suicide

is investigating a suicide that occurred Saturday afternoon at its Harrison facility, police have confirmed.

Nubia Fernandez, a patient at the facility, hanged herself with a belt, police say. St. Vincent's must now make a report to the state Office of Mental Health, a requirement in all such instances.

If the state finds the internal report insufficient it will conduct its own investigation, according to the Journal News. The newspaper is also reporting that former employees have voiced complaints in the past about low staffing levels on weekends.

The small hospital has been in Harrison since 1879 and provides inpatient and outpatient mental health and chemical dependency tests for children and adults at its main campus on North Street.
