Humane Society Spotlight: Miranda Needs Room to Run

This week's pet of the week provided by the Westchester Humane Society in Harrison.

When volunteers meet Miranda for the first time their reactions are always the same: “she's so sweet” and “what an athlete—I need to go back to the gym!”

When they learn that she has spent two of her three years on this earth in a 4x30 foot run at the animal shelter they are incredulous; they can’t understand why this perfect dog has not been adopted. They marvel at how well behaved she is, especially given the fact that she maintains so much energy and playful enthusiasm while confined to a small space. Eventually they wax philosophically about the nature of dogs like Miranda, and how they can teach humans the lessons of a life appreciated—even a very simple life.

Miranda has the personality of a smaller, affectionate dog but in the body of a linebacker and with the face of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She is extremely people—and animal—friendly. The intimidation factor is lost immediately as she wags her tail, licks your face, and leans her body into yours to be pet. Her next move is to roll onto her back so your kids can pet her as well! Miranda also loves to play with other dogs. She is an athlete who loves to chase balls, understands fetching sticks, and is just waiting for you to demonstrate how a frisbee works.

One of her favorite moves is the forward body-roll culminating in a back scratch session on the grass, so bring on the Doggie Olympics! She is very good on the leash, although she is occasionally given to exuberant bounds forward of unbridled enthusiasm. Miranda would love to go jogging with you, and she would be well served with a yard. Amazingly, she spends 23 hours a day in a small run and still keeps her spirits up.

Miranda knows basic commands, and is dog-friendly. She is great with kids, but we suggest a home with older children just because of her size and strength. She has been spayed, is fully vaccinated, heartworm tested and is in terrific health. The adoption fee is $130.
