Harrison Celebrates National Library Week

The Harrison Public Library has several events planned to celebrate a week designed to recognize an important part of the community.

It may not get the recognition of other holidays, but those who spend time at the Harrison Public Library may have noticed a sign near the main entrance letting people know that National Library Week begins April 11.

Several events are planned in addition to a musical performance on Sunday. The week is an opportunity for the library to connect with residents and continue to build on what has already been a great year for the library.

"Circulation and patronage have increased a lot over the past year," said Marilyn Horton, reference librarian, adding that the economic recession has led to more people taking advantage of borrowing books and DVD's for free. "It's like a diner but you don't need to buy anything."

This week's events include a library card drive and a month long creative writing contest for children. The library is also offering a free book to any children who write a story about why they love their library.

"It brings them out quite a bit," said Children's Librarian Margaret LoRusso. "It helps."

Although this week isn't expected to produce a huge jump in visitors, it is a chance to continue the year-round process of involving Harrison's younger children in the educational activities the library has to offer. LoRusso said that maintaining a connection with children, especially this time of year as we look toward summer, is very important.

"It gives continuity to their eduction so they don't just break from school and do nothing before going back in September," she said.

Most of the events planned for National Library Week are geared at elementary aged children, but there are a few activities that include all age groups.

This week's events are:

A Millenium Book Club Meeting on Wednesday from 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Story Time (ages 3 - 5) on Wednesday from 10:30 - 11 a.m.

Jilly's Puppets on Wednesday, also at 10:30 a.m.

"Why I Love My Library Card" all week until Friday.
