Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot–How Are You Staying Cool?

Sticky, sultry, hot and humid. Any way you describe it, there is only one thing on residents' minds this week–keeping cool.

With the thermometer hitting the 90s and the heat index making it feel like 100, folks across Fairfield and Westchester are enduring the second heatwave of the summer this week. The only end in site is a "cool down" on Saturday and Sunday with temps dropping to the high 80s.

For those working outdoors, folks without air conditioners at home, elderly, young children and those with health conditions, the heat and humidity can be dangerous.

“Excessive heat can be deadly; it has caused more deaths in recent years than all other weather events,” American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter CEO Mario Bruno said in a statement. “We want everyone to stay safe during the hot weather and have some reminders for them to follow when the weather is hot and humid.”

Here are some quick tips to staying safe in the heat from the Red Cross:

  • Never leave children or pets in a car!
  • Hydrate and avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Avoid extreme temperature changes
  • Wear loose-fitting, light, clothing
  • Stay indoors if possible
  • Avoid exercise during the hottest part of the day
  • Take frequent breaks when working outside
  • Check in on folks that don't have air conditioning
  • Check on pets and make sure they have plenty of water
  • Get to a cooling center, mall, library or theater to cool off

So, during this brutal summer weather, what is the best way to keep cool? Hanging inside in the AC? Going to the beach? A dip in the pool? Ice cream indulgence? Share your best tips for beating the heat in the comments section below!
