Miss Anything? This Week in Review

A look back at Harrison news during the week of June 30.

After a beautiful holiday weekend, it is once again time to look back at an eventful week in Harrison news.

Another coyote attack in Rye had some residents concerned after four reported coyote sightings here in Harrison. Authorities are still working to find and identify the animals responsible for the Rye attacks, but that could prove to be difficult because the animals cover a wide area on a daily basis and typically avoid human contact.

The Westchester County Board took a stand against hydraulic fracturing in the Catskill region, voting unanimously against any drilling in the area. Hydraulic fracturing, although legal in New York State, has become a hot-button issue because of concerns that gas used in the process could contaminate water in the Catskills that is used by Westchester County and New York City.

A water main break on Tuesday morning left several businesses in the area of Manhattanville Road with little or no water pressure throughout most of the day. Full water was restored by the evening, after authorities were able to bypass a fractured pipe.

We had two weeks worth of police blotters this week, including a man who was arrested in Harrison for allegedly carrying 135 grams of cocaine in his vehicle. Todd Kellerman was stopped stopped near 209 Harrison Avenue because of a fractured windshield. Police later found what they believe to be cocaine hidden behind his rear license plate.

In sports news we had the results of our Harrison Patch athlete of the year, as chosen by the readers. After over 300 votes, readers selected softball catcher GiGi LoDolce as the female athlete of the year and baseball third baseman Mike DeLacy as the male athlete of the year.

Early Friday morning the Harrison Fire Department responded to a large brush fire in Veterans Park. Flames from the fire reached into the tree line in a wooded area of the park and took authorities several hours to extinguish.

This week's town board meeting also featured a donation from a group of elementary school students.

The Fourth of July weekend featured a stunning fireworks display on Saturday night in Harrison. The display was aided by several donations from individuals and local businesses and was enjoyed by all in attendance. Port Chester also had a display on Sunday that was well attended.
