Miss Anything? This Week in Review

A summary of the news in Harrison during the week of May 17.

The school vote and results, an early morning fire and another local college graduation were the major stories of another busy week in Harrison news.

The school vote on Tuesday marked the end of sometimes heated debate about next year's budget. Despite opposition from some residents who said that the 3.3 percent tax increase was unnecessary, the budget passed with relative ease. Fifty-six percent of voters approved the budget, which cleared the Harrison Board of Education to officially pass it on Wednesday night.

Voters also elected Jason Schechter over Naomi Oppmann as the newest member of the school board.

Earlier in the week we visited with a Harrison High School senior who has overcome remarkable odds while becoming an important part of the community. R.J. Suhre was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of seven. After surviving the disease he became a manager on the varsity basketball team, a player and manager on the baseball team and has also designed a dog park that will open early this summer.

Suhre will graduate from Harrison High School this spring and will go to college next year, we wish him the best of luck.

We also have an update on the foreclosed property on Mamaroneck Avenue that is owned by Strait Gate Church. What will happen to that property, which borders Harrison and Mamaroneck, is still unknown. We will have updates on that story as the legal process continues.

The Rye Patch also reported this week that some middle school students in the district could face felony charges after a topless photo of a 12-year-old girl has been distributed to students in the school. Reports from that story said that the photo has been widely distributed and may have been viewed by students from Harrison.
