Big Plans Set For "It's Great To Live in Harrison Day"

A big lineup of events are already setup for what the town expects to be another successful "It's Great to Live in Harrison Day."

Events in town this weekend will include fireworks, rides, a parade and even a visit with a police K-9—all this to show once again why it is great to live in Harrison.

Harrison will hold its annual Columbus Day celebration this weekend, starting with a tour of police headquarters on Saturday and culminating with a parade and festival on Monday morning.

The Harrison police open house will allow anyone interested to not only tour the police headquarters, but to sit in a police car and see a K-9 officer at work. The event will take place from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.

Saturday night will feature a fireworks display near the West Harrison Fire Department at 7 p.m. Although the town at one point asked for donations to help fund the display, the fireworks are expected to go on as planned, according to Harrison/Mayor Supervisor Joan Walsh.

On Sunday the Columbus Day Society is hosting an evening dinner and dance at Graziella's Restaurant in White Plains. That event will, however, require reservations.

A parade will take place at 10 a.m. Monday starting at the intersection of Thatcher and Halstead Avenues. A festival celebrating "It's Great to Live in Harrison Day" will immediately follow at Riis Park.

"It's a social event that brings a lot of people together," said Walsh. "It's a fun day."

There will be rides available for children at the festival, along with food and other refreshments available for purchase. Along with being an entertaining event for all Harrison residents, the festival is also an important fundraiser for several local groups including the Parent Teacher Association and the Lions Club.

So all are encouraged to come out and celebrate this great community.
