So Long Summer and Hello Autumn!

A preview of the farmers market on Labor Day weekend.

It's Labor Day weekend! I am at a loss for words here: really, it was like last week when we opened the West Harrison Farmers Market. Thankfully, we still have all of September’s and October’s Saturdays to go. Maybe, if we are busy enough, we will be able to continue into November.

I am not sorry to see August gone: it was slow at the market with so many families away on vacation. Also, it was as humid as Florida! We had some great fun with the children who came to decorate bags and T-shirts. It is such fun to see the kids finish their work with pride! We will continue to have activities for the children. Tomorrow, we will have live entertainment with Joe No, a musician, who will be playing for us.

I am hopeful that we have a nice turnout Saturday, even though I know so many people have taken a long weekend away. Omar’s Farm Stand will be there with amazing plums and raspberries. Sweet and juicy. My husband and I had to eat them, then I was so aggravated with myself because I wanted to make plum tarts with them. Those plums never had a chance. I will definitely be buying plums tomorrow. I hope the tomatoes will be in season until March! They are so big and so delicious. Just for kicks I weighed one, it weighed 20 ½ ounces. It was all meat, little seeds and flavor that was spectacular!

To everyone who is home for the weekend, come down to the market and purchase some fresh produce for your holiday table. Whether you eat inside or outside, your menu will be a hit with the produce, breads and baked goods you will find at our market.

You all know that September brings apples and pears oh, my! Apple butter, apple crisp, apple tarts, apple pie... yum, it just goes on and on. Then we have the pumpkins—and we will have pumpkins! We have lots of great things coming your way in the next two months. All of this with cool, crisp, weather. Be still my heart!

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday!

Have a great holiday weekend! Have fun and be safe!
