PLASTIC AND OCULAR SURGERY CENTER FIRST IN WESTCHESTER TO OFFER BLADELESS CATARACT SURGERY

Advanced, State-of-the-Art Femtosecond Laser Provides Image-Guided Precision,  Eliminates Need for Scalpel

The Plastic & Ocular Surgery Center of Westchester is the first in Westchester to offer ReLACS for cataract surgery. ReLACS™, which stands for refractive laser assisted cataract surgery, is the most advanced cataract procedure available today.  It uses Sightpath Medical’s™ next generation Femtosecond laser to bring bladeless, image-guided computer precision to cataract surgery.  Surgeons have the ability to program the laser to perform according to their individual preferences and it uses targeted laser pulses to create incisions in the lens capsule, crystalline lens and cornea to allow for cataract removal.

“ReLACS delivers remarkable, pinpoint accuracy to the procedure beyond what is possible in traditional scalpel-based procedures,” said Samuel Beran, M.D., medical director of Plastic & Ocular Surgery Center of Westchester.  “This state-of-the-art technology extends the surgeons expertise with - literally - laser precision and results in optimal outcomes for many patients.”

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the United States, with an estimated 3,000,000 procedures performed annually nationwide ("Cataract Statistics - Statistic Brain.”  2012 Statistic Brain Research Institute. July 31. 2012. www.statisticbrain.com/cataract-statistics). With the first wave of baby boomers beginning to turn 65, that number is anticipated increase significantly. According to the National Eye Center at the National Institutes of Health, approximately 70 percent of people 80 and older, which translates to 25 million seniors today, suffer from cataracts.

“While ReLACS may not be appropriate for every patient, when combined with advanced implant options for those that it is, it may even offer freedom from glasses, contact lenses or reading glasses after surgery,” according to Beran.
