The Journal News is moving its headquarters from Gannett Drive this September, the newspaper announced Wednesday, clearing the way for the demolition of the current building to build a Life Time Fitness center in its place.
The newspaper company will move its news, advertising, marketing and business support operations south of Interstate 287 to nearby 1133 Westchester Avenue where it will lease a 30,400 square foot space from RPW Group Inc., the newspaper announced.
Life Time Fitness with The Journal News and the Town of Harrison to buy the current property in 2011. Life Time Fitness plans to build a 209,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility at 1 Gannet Drive. The fitness company said earlier this year they hope to start tearing down the building by the end of 2012.
The fitness center will include three swimming pools, 10 tennis courts and a full-service spa. There are also plans for a separate children's gym, more than 400 pieces of exercise equipment, squash courts and a two-story rock-climbing wall.
Once completed, the fitness center is expected to bring about 200 jobs to the area, according to previous site plan proposals.
The Journal News said it will maintain its current offices in West Nyack and Mt. Kisco.
