My husband did a really great thing the other night. Good enough for the ladies in his office to say “aww” and the ones in my office to say “I wish my man would do that.” Good enough for me to smile for three hours straight. Good enough for people to say “Josh is so great!”
Yes ladies, he took me to the for dinner.
Nothing speaks to my heart more than quality time, food and affection. At the Melting Pot, you get about two and a half to three hours of quality time, in a romantic setting, and of course-food. Fondue, no less! Where you dip seemingly normal, blah food into amazing concoctions of cheese; wine and garlic; or chocolate, caramel and nuts. Amazing. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, Birthday Parties, or even a night out with the girls!
We arrived for an 8:15 dinner reservation, worried about Ballston Parking-as it is always unpleasant, to find out that they have a parking garage and will validate! Already, the evening was off to a great start :). We were lead to our table, seated in a dimly lit, very comfortable booth. We were greeted by our waiter who came and took our drink order. They had some wine specials that night-pretty reasonable bottle prices. I don’t know how frequently they run specials like that, though. But really consider trying a cocktail from their extensive menu.
We were walked through our menu by a nice, knowledgeable waiter who looked like David Arquette (I’m not kidding, even Josh agreed). Because the Melting Pot is as much an experience as a meal, it’s good to have a pro on your side. He helped us select a cheese course, salad, meat course and reminded us about saving room for dessert. He then turned on the burner in the center of the table and left to prepare our cheese course.
Which, the table is awesome! It has a burner in the center where you cook your fondue. The waiter brings out a pot for each course (cheese, meat and chocolate) and places it in the center of the table, leaving you and your dinner partners to cook and dip accordingly. It’s a lot of fun, but they’re not joking about the burner or the fondue pots (made of all metal/iron) being hot. Ask Joshua, who despite being told that, decided to touch it to see how hot it was. I’m not kidding. His words of advice, “Just don’t do it.”
Anyway-the cheese course was...amazing. We had the Traditional Swiss Cheese fondue: a creamy, delicious mix of Swiss and Gruyere cheeses, garlic, lemon and wine. Our waiter mixed it right in front of us in our pot, making sure it was the right texture and consistency before leaving us to our first course. He also brought chunks of green apple, bread and a bowl of veggies to dip and enjoy. We absolutely loved it. I loved the apples and broccoli, Joshua loved the bread. The cheese was really just perfect: not clumpy, not too much garlic or wine, just smooth, creamy, and amazing. We were sad to see this course be done.
We then had our salad. Which was good...but honestly just like halftime at a football game: most people don’t really care about it. We wanted to get back to fondue courses-they’re so much more fun than a salad!!
Then...the meat course. We ordered a mix of chicken, shrimp, two types of steak and potstickers. The waiter brought this plate of raw meat along with a bowl of veggies: mushroom caps, broccoli and potatoes. The plate of raw meat was...little gross to look at...but once you get past that a real treat awaits. We had the waiter prepare their (from scratch) vegetable broth to cook all the meat in. Once the broth was at a decent temperature, we were able to skewer some meat, stick it in the pot and let it cook. We dumped the whole bowl of veggies in right away so they’d get cooking (we love our veggies) and the waiter immediately offered to grab another bowl! We didn’t need it, but with any sort of sides, they’ll go get more if you’d like, which is really nice. Our favorite meat this course was the teriyaki-marinated steak. W-O-W. It was so tender, cooked up so well, and was just amazing. We also loved the sauces...they brought out six types of sauce to complement each type of meat we had. Be sure to try the curry sauce on the chicken...really good!
Then...the dessert decision. At this point, we were so full we didn’t need dessert...but who would turn down the Flaming Turtle. It’s milk chocolate, caramel and chopped pecans flambeed right at your table. We were really excited to find out we could substitute dark chocolate, and of course did that! Our waiter brought all of these ingredients out, prepared the fondue pot table side...and then presented all the wonderful things we got to dip into this delightful, delicious chocolate. Bananas, strawberries, cheesecake, pound cake, marshmallows covered in chocolate....amazing. We ate it all up-it was soooo good. Dipping cheesecake in chocolate...just...wow.
The whole experience was perfect: romantic atmosphere, great waiter, delicious food, and about three hours to spend time together. It was a nice break from our otherwise hectic Ballston lives. We would both highly recommend this for a date or a Girls Night Out (which, every second Tuesday of the month they host a night exclusively for girls! Grab a bunch of your friends and enjoy a four course meal for $30!). The price tag....it’s steep. This is a place to go to celebrate, not your everyday joint. It was a special treat for Joshua and I to go. Check out the menu (and note, many of those prices are per person, so be careful-it adds up!).
Overall...we loved it. We left feeling full, happy, and like we finally went out for a nice date night. We would highly recommend this for you and that special someone (hint...Valentine’s Day....I’m just saying!)

Joshua: It was odd cooking my own food at first, but then it was liking having fire to play with at our dinner table. It was a great place to sit and talk for awhile. You’ll have three hours so make sure this is not an uncomfortable first date.
