Magazine Selects China White, Craftsman Ale House Among County's Best

The editors of Westchester Magazine selected China White in Purchase and the Craftsman Ale House downtown in a list of the area's best places and services.

Westchester Magazine's list of the county's top restaurants, bars, cultural spots and shopping destinations included two establishments from Harrison.

on Harrison Avenue and on Anderson Hill Road in Purchase were among the 349 places that made the list in 2012. Every year the magazine's editors select their favorite locations within the county and break them into categories.

China White was one of 52 establishments to make the cut in the "Food & Drink" category. The restaurant's Peking Duck was a favorite of the magazine's staff, which had this to say:

"Admittedly, this dish looks a bit like the work of Hannibal Lecter; the duck is served on a wide platter, with its skin and flesh expertly removed and splayed like an edible Rorschach test. But who cares? We love the simple pleasures of swiping our tiny pancake with hoisin, and then loading it up with that crackly/sweet duck. The final touch is the watery crunch of shredded scallion, and a sip from one of China White’s wicked mai tais. Turns out, our Rorschach test spells the word “delicious.”," the magazine said.

China White opened in Purchase last spring with hopes of bringing a healthy and more authentic Chinese style restaurant to the area. Check out  just before the restaurant's opening.

The Craftsman Ale House was selected as part of the "Fun & Leisure" category and was named as one of the four best beer destinations in the county.

"This sweet bit of new beer-geek bait offers home-brewer events, six changing taps, flights, and “kill the keg” parties; they must need a crowbar to get some folks out," the magazine said.

The bar opened its doors in late 2011, offering a variety of quality craft beers. Co-owner Liana Zamora about her plans for the restaurant earlier this year, a few weeks after opening.

Both relatively new establishments have already made a name for themselves among the local scene. If you know of other local places you think are among Harrison's best, or would like to nominate one of these two, please let us know in contest running this summer.
