Look at That! HHS Art Recognized at Competition

The art of Harrison High School senior Sofia SanMarco will be displayed in Washington D.C. for the next year.

For the next year, the art of Harrison senior Sofia SanMarco will hang in Washington, D.C., where it will be viewed by federal officials, members of congress, staffers and thousands of tourists from all over the country.

SanMarco's work, entitled The Fight's Not Over, was selected by Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) as the winner of the 2011 Congressional Arts Competition for the 18th District of New York. The art will hang in the Cannon Tunnel, which connects the U.S. Capitol Building to the Cannon House Office Building.

The piece was selected out of 54 submissions from artists in 13 different school districts.

Another Harrison senior was recognized as runner-up in the competition. Alyssa Loffredo's piece Street Smarts was recognized along with the third and fourth place finishers.

“I have the pleasure of being proud of my students, the ideas they have, and the work they do every day of every year. It’s why I walk around Harrison High School with a smile on my face,” said art teacher Lisa Monti. “At this moment in time, I have the opportunity to be very proud of both Sofia and Alyssa, two artists who put their heart and soul into the works they create.”

SanMarco, who has also excelled as a leader on the school's , will attend Skidmore College next year where she hopes to continue to pursue her passion in arts and athletics.
