Pete Malinverni to Perform at Purchase College

Sizzling Evening Features Recital and Lecture on Jazz Improvisation

Nothing takes the edge off a hot summer evening like cool jazz. This July 12, Purchase College, SUNY will present Summer Piano, featuring Pete Malinverni, a mainstay on the New York City and world jazz performance and recording scenes.

Malinverni, incoming director of Jazz Studies at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, will present a free recital and lecture entitled "What's Going on Up There?" in which he will demonstrate the elements of improvised jazz using some of his original compositions as well as those by Thelonious Monk, George Gershwin and others.

"SummerPiano provides a special opportunity for the Westchester community to experience the great musical talent at Purchase College," says Suzanne Farrin, director of the college's Conservatory of Music. "Based on the overwhelming popularity of past concerts, we plan to continue offering free piano performances throughout the fall and spring."

Since he came to New York in 1981, Malinverni has made a mark for himself in live and recorded performances at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note, and has toured in North and South America, Europe and Japan.
