"A screenwriter of Antonioni's Zabriskie Point and a key contributor to Bertolucci's Besieged, Clare's directorial debut was the Oscar-nominated short film Couples and Robbers, and each of her subsequent films are, in their way, as original, bold and droll as the filmmaker herself. Rough Magic was one of Russell Crowe's earliest American parts and for me it remains one of his very most charming and engaged portrayals. Teamed here with Bridget Fonda, the resulting chemistry is cinema magic and the film remains an unjustly rarely-seen gem from one of Britain's finest directors."
