Mark Nowak Reading

The Manhattanville College English Department is proud to feature Mark Nowak, the new Director of the Master of Arts in Writing Program and associate professor of English, in a special reading on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the East Library in Reid Castle on the Manhattanville campus.

“My first few months at Manhattanville have been so energizing. I'm honored and thrilled at this opportunity to share a small slice of the creative work that I do with all the new friends I'm making here,” Nowak said. “And I think it's always important that our students know us not only as their teachers but as the significant researchers, scholars, and creative artists we are outside the classroom. It helps to make the connections we're building with our students even deeper and more lasting.”

Nowak will be reading from his recent book on mining disasters in the US and China, Coal Mountain Elementary, and sharing videos from his poetry workshops with Ford autoworkers at factories in the United States and South Africa.

“Mark is committed to fostering the creative expression of new and emerging writers,” Juliette Wells, Chair of the English Department, said. “In both his own work and the workshops he has conducted around the world, he has demonstrated the power of poetry to inspire, connect, and empower. We look forward to an exciting future for the M.A. program with his vision and leadership and are proud to introduce him to the community.”

Poet Erika K. Stanley, a second year graduate student in Manhattanville's Master of Arts in Writing Program, will open the event. Stanley currently serves as Poetry Editor of the program's literary journal, Inkwell.
