Straightening a Dangerous Curve: West Street Construction

Work is almost complete on West Street, where  a contractor is realigning a dangerous bend.

The project includes not only straightening the curve but also installing new drainage and retaining walls.

The detours and the noise haven’t bothered the Krigsmans, longtime West Street residents who live just down the street from the construction work.

“It’s very important, what they’re doing,” said Ruben Krigsman. “Cars come around that curve and you cannot see them—they’re blocked from view. This will alleviate a real problem.”

The sharp curve and the water issues have made that section of the road highly dangerous, he said, enumerating recent accidents including a young police officer who died and a car full of Harrison High School students that flipped over.

The $241,259 project is being handled by Bilotta Construction Corp. of Rye, which was awarded the contract April 4 by the Harrison Village Board of Trustees.

The work should be finished by the end of the week, Town Engineer Mike Amodeo said.
