Question: Are Fireworks' Beauty Worth Their Cost?

Independence Day fireworks shows can be spectacular to watch...and spectacular to pay for.

Fireworks are undeniably the symbol of this country's freedom and independence. But as municipal budgets have tightened during the last few years, some locals view the shows as no different from shooting money into the sky. 

Due to the tough economy, Harrison has stopped using taxpayer money to pay for the town's fireworks display—instead relying on donations for funding.

, while Dobbs Ferry designated a "fireworks fund," through which the village raised upwards of $12,000 to pay for its show.

Port Chester spent $30,000 for its pyrotechnical display, and Nyack spent $7,500—raised through a combination of tax dollars and donations from local businesses.
