Free HIV Testing Available Wednesday at Planned Parenthood

Testing and counseling will take place at health centers in New Rochelle, White Plains, Spring Valley, Brewster and Yonkers.

In recognition of National HIV Test Day, Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic will offer free testing Wednesday at its New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers health centers in Westchester County, Spring Valley in Rockland County and Brewster in Putnam County.

The test, counseling and office visit are free when visiting any PPHP health center for an HIV test only. Test results will be available while you wait.

"National HIV Testing Day is a great reminder to get yourself tested for HIV and other STDs," said Reina Schiffrin, president and CEO. "When it comes to your health and the health of your partner, the best ways to protect yourselves are through regular testing and consistent use of condoms."

Appointments are not necessary, but are encouraged to reduce waiting time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that, out of the more than 1 million people living in the United States with HIV/AIDS, an estimated 21 percent are unaware they are infected.

In specific populations, the percentage is even higher, such as 50 percent of HIV-infected adolescents. Planned Parenthood said early detection of HIV enables people to start treatment sooner, leading to better health outcomes and longers lives.
