Cobble Stone - Where Burgers are Affordable and the Nostalgia is Free

Comfy booths, 25¢ a song jukebox, and even the prices are nostalgic. Part one in a two-part series on The Cobble Stone Restaurant.

Written by Leslie Yager

Farmer John who operates Augustine's farm on King Street just over the state line in Greenwich hasn't been to Cobble Stone in years, but insists the burgers are "fabulous and affordable." According to John, he was banned from the establishment "four years ago – maybe four decades ago," he recalls for, "making a pest of myself," he said with a laugh. "Joe Sala told my dad to tell me I ought not to show my face there."

Brothers Scott and Craig Sala send word that the ban is lifted and to come down and have a beer and a burger. "People love this place but sometimes forget we're here," said Scott. "We're still here, still affordable, and if you're from Greenwich, most of the longstanding burger restaurants are gone," added Craig, going on to list Chopping Block, Thataway, Horseneck Tavern, and Auggie's as alternatives that have taken down their shingles.

Cars and trucks whiz down Anderson Hill Road through Greenwich, Purchase, and Harrison and it's easy to miss The Cobble Stone, though it's been there for decades. And in a neighborhood undergoing visible changes, the building that houses the restaurant has remained remarkably untouched outside and in.

"Where else can you get a beer for this price," said Craig, the younger of the two brothers who run The Cobble Stone these days. "People ask if the price is on special," he said, shaking his head. "In fact where can you get a great burger that's this affordable," he asked, going on to explain that many of the Cobble Stone's customers are regulars who live on the west side of Greenwich and love the restaurant's convenient location.

Scott Sala, (GHS Class of '91) and brother Craig (GHS class of '87) took turns describing their varied clientele. "We get SUNY Purchase professors, grad students, business people from local office parks and families," said Scott. "Lots of families. We have a kids' menu," interjected Craig. "We have a lot of regulars," said Scott.

Indeed there is something for everyone, with affordable menu items ranging from to "Plain Jane" burger for $8.99 and a Budweiser beer for $3.25, to the recently added prime rib special on Friday and Saturday nights.

For the truly hungry, there is the popular "Stuffed Burger" with 10 oz. of Black Angus Beef coated in a 14 spice seasoning and stuffed with the chef's creation of the week. There are eight entree-sized salads to choose from, all priced around $10.00, as well as sandwiches, appetizers and specialties of the house like Baby Back Ribs, Broiled Salmo, or "Beer Can Chicken."

The Cobble Stone is located at  620 Anderson Hill Road. The restaurant opens daily at 11:30am and the kitchen stays open until midnight seven days a week. Tel. (914) 253-9678
