Classic Cars Cruise To The Lake

Several people from the surrounding area competed in a car show on the green in Silver Lake.

For the past three weeks the Harrison Recreation Department and Superintendent Ron Belmont have hosted dozens of classic cars in a weekly car show. The night comprises of prizes for the top five cars, a 50/50 raffle along with other raffles, and several cars from the past decades.

The show took place on the grass field in between the West Harrison Park Field and the Silver Lake Business district right next to the Gazebo and Parking lot. In the first week 48 cars came to the show and since then the numbers have been very steady.

The entry fee was free for all of the classic cars and the shows will continue to run into the fall.

One of the nicer cars at the show was a 1967 Ford Mustang owned by the Wall family. Mr. Wall bought the car in January and since then he has been working on rebuilding it with his son Edward.

Edward, a sixth grader, immediately hopped in the driver's seat and he and his father were both eager to speak to me about the long restoration process of his new car.

"This car takes up a lot of gas but when you hit the gas it really moves," said the senior Wall, "this is a project for me and my kids to work on together and they are learning about the car a little more every day."

The Wall's family Mustang didn't land in the top five for the evening but maybe with a new paint job and a little more work the family will get a trophy next Friday.

Mitchell Gootnick is an avid fan of classic cars and he drove up from Queens just for Friday night's show. He was impressed with the suburban car show in Silver Lake.

"We definitely don't have anything like this in Queens," said Gootnick. "You can tell the community appreciates this because they continuously come out and support the show. Harrison is lucky to have something like this."

The five trophies went to a 1965 Corvette, a 1920 Model T, a 1950 Ford, 1965 Cadillac El Dorado, and a 1959 Corvette.

Next week's show will be held on Friday the 23rd at the same location. It will start at six and the winners will be announced around 8:30 p.m.
