5 Lions Clubs Gather to Support Nursing

Lions Clubs from Mount Kisco, Bedford Hills, Bedford Village, Pound Ridge and Armonk hold annual joint spaghetti dinner to fundraise for nursing scholarships.

Five Lions Clubs from around northern Westchester County held a joint spaghetti dinner on Sunday for a fundraising to support a nursing scholarships fund.

The local Lions, from Mount Kisco, Bedford Hills, Bedford Village, Pound Ridge and Armonk, held the dinner at the American Legion hall in Mount Kisco. They each support a joint fund that's used for two scholarships per year. One goes to a senior from a local high school while the other goes to a current employee of either Northern Westchester Hospital or Mount Kisco Medical Group who wants to continue their career.

This year's career continuity related scholarship went to Maylegn Holguin, who grew up in Mount Kisco and Millwood and is now a student at Westchester Community College. Holguin, who now lives in Yonkers and works at MKMG as a medical assistant in the cardiology department, is proud to receive it.

"I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart," said Holguin, who was also given a bouquet of flowers. "Thank you so much.

The winner for the high school senior scholarship has yet to be announced. In past years, recipients have included students from Fox Lane, John Jay, Byram Hills and John F. Kennedy Catholic.

The scholarship program was founded in 2004 and is meant to address a shortage of nurses, according to Raymond Infarinato, who is with the Bedford Village Lions. The shortage is a national issue that plays out locally he explained. From a slideshow that Infarinato put together, he noted that there's a projected shortage of roughly 800,000 nurses by 2020.

Lions Clubs are proud to sponsor scholarships. Lions Clubs are ENTIRELY volunteer. 100 percent of what Lions raise from the public goes to our charities and service projects.
