Manhattanville College Sponsors Lecture by Legal Scholar Allan Meltzer on “Regulation and the Rule of Law”

Purchase, NY  April 9, 2014 -- The distinguished legal scholar, economist and author Allan H. Meltzer, University Professor of Political Economy at Carnegie-Mellon University, on April 17 will discuss “Regulation and the Rule of Law” at this year’s annual lecture series sponsored by Manhattanville College’s Economic Freedom Institute and the Department of Economics, Finance and Management.

The lecture is free to the public and will take place in the West Room, Reid Castle at 7:00 p.m. on the Manhattanville College campus.
“The freedom that we all enjoy depends on our constitution, as we all know.  A central tenet of the system that preserves both property rights and individual liberties is known as the rule of law,” stated Meltzer.  “The way we regulate brings special privilege to some and not to others.  With regulation, we get crony capitalism, circumvention of rules, and corruption.  We must not abandon regulation, but we must reform it.”

“We are honored to have Dr. Meltzer as our speaker for this decade-old annual lecture series,” said Anna Gandolfi, director of The Economic Freedom Institute.  “He is known throughout the United States as an expert on monetary policy and the Federal Reserve, as well as the rule of law.”

Professor Meltzer has served as a consultant to the Congress, the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve, World Bank, and U.S. and foreign governments.  He was one of the founders of the Shadow Open Market Committee and has published and lectured extensively.
