MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE APPOINTS DIRECTOR OF ITS NEW ROSE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND LITERACY

Purchase, NY, February 04, 2014 -- Pledger Fedora, Ph.D., has been appointed Professor/Director for the new Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy in the School of Education at Manhattanville College.   Dr. Fedora, until recently an Assistant Professor in the Educational Studies Department at Seton Hall University, will implement and oversee the Rose Institute, whose mission is to teach multi-sensory learning methodologies to graduate students.

 

The new 13-credit graduate certificate program will be offered to graduate students as a separate certificate through the School of Education; or as part of the existing 45 credit Masters in Professional Studies (MPS) in Literacy and Special Education Childhood.

The Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy was established through a recent gift to Manhattanville by Sandra Priest Rose, the founder of Reading Reform Foundation of New York, an educational advocacy organization based in New York City and Westchester County, that champions phonics-based teaching to improve the reading and language skills of school children.

Dr. Fedora is a Fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and was professionally trained in an International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) accredited training course for the professional preparation of multisensory structured language education specialists. She was a classroom teacher and resource teacher in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels.

 

Dr. Fedora has extensive training and experience with phonics instruction at the K-12 and higher education levels. Her research interests include early intervention, multisensory instruction, and interventions for students at-risk for reading difficulty. She is also interested in the accuracy of teachers' judgments of students' level of risk for reading difficulty in the early elementary grades.  She has a B.A. in Art History, an M.Ed. in Reading and Language Arts, and a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on special education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
