The Harrison Central School District held the grand opening of their new fitness center this week at Harrison High School.
Junior Coby Lefkowitz and Freshman Joana Ayala were on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The new Harrison High School Fitness Center, a renovation project designed, constructed, and completed entirely in- house by members of the District’s Buildings and Grounds Crew, was created to be a state-of-the-art exercise facility that will be used by students and faculty. The new fitness center can be accessed by students and faculty focusing on personal fitness and wellness before and immediately after school, by physical education and special education classes during school hours, and by over 500 athletes on the 29 varsity teams and the 30-plus junior varsity and freshman teams in the afternoons and evenings.
“The fitness center will be an asset to the physical education program where students will have the opportunity to develop personal fitness plans and an appreciation of life-long fitness/wellness activities,” said Patricia Seligman, Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics for the Harrison Central School District.
The Harrison High School Fitness Center boasts treadmills and elliptical machines, free weights and weight machines, a Cardio center, wheelchair accessible upper body rowing machines, televisions with equipment instructions and news, and much more.
“The fitness center was designed to be 'user friendly' with a focus on making fitness available for all skill levels,” Seligman said. “The expanded hours both before and after school will give students more choices and our Fitness Supervisor, who is a certified personal trainer, will be there both before and after school to provide guidance and instruction.”
Student trainers as well as athletic coaches were on hand to demonstrate proper machine and workout techniques.
