Harrison Council for the Arts presents paintings by Luis de Mena at the Harrison Public Library, 2 Bruce Avenue, June 4-29 with an opening reception Saturday, June 9 from 2:00 to 4:00pm.
Luis de Mena was born in Madrid in 1961. He arrived with his family to the U.S. in 1998 and lives in Rye, NY. Luis combines his professional life in New York with his passion for painting. He has been trained in academic realism by studying the techniques of the Spanish and Dutch old masters in depth, under the personal direction of artist Victor Zaldivar. Prior to this, he grew as an artist at L’Atelier Academia de Arte in Madrid, the National Academy of Fine Arts and the Arts Students League in New York.
Says Luis de Mena of his art: “A portrait has to be much more than a moment frozen in time. I try to capture the essence of the individual so the viewer can make an intimate connection to the human being on the canvas, and not just its representation.”
His exquisite paintings and commissioned portraits have been featured in galleries such as The Salmagundi Art Club, UConn Art Gallery, Old Lyme Art Academy, Ridgewood Art Institute, The Arts Students League of New York and The National Academy of Fine Arts.
