Hundreds of Passengers Stuck on Hot Train in Larchmont Monday

After an emergency call is made from train, all four tracks are closed. Passengers wait in the heat for over 1.5 hours.

A total of 660 passengers were kept on a disabled train at the Larchmont train station during yesterday afternoon's hot temperatures, according to a breaking news alert.

Amtrak would not allow passengers to get off the train because of safety issues, and to keep other trains on schedule, news reports said. Water bottles were being distributed on board.

At 1:58 p.m., Larchmont Police asked Metro-North to put a hold on all four tracks at the station after they received an emergency call from someone inside the train, said Metro-North Spokesman Dan Brucker. The train stalled at about the same time, he added.

At that time, Metro-North did not have trains going through that area, so the closure did not affect other trains, said Brucker. About 15 minutes later, when it was determined that the call was not an emergency, police released a hold on two of those tracks.

At 3:40 p.m., an Amtrak rescue engine was coupled up with the inoperative engine on the stalled train, and the train was on the move. The Larchmont station is two stops and typically between six and eight minutes from the Harrison station.
